What is this?
A Jangleheart Circus is a three-day (mostly improv) comedy festival produced by Upstairs Gallery. This years Festival will be held over Labor day weekend at three Chicago comedy institutions, CIC Theater, The Annoyance, and iO Chicago.
Thursday September 3rd at CIC (one stage)
Friday September 4th at Annoyance Theatre & Bar (two stages)
Saturday September 5th at iO (three stages)
So It’s pretty different logistically from years past, but not in vibe, energy and FUN.
Gotta keep the dream alive! The Upstairs Gallery’s physical location closed it’s doors in August 2014, but it’s spirit lives on in its ongoing productions, performers who put up shows there, and this festival. We’re lucky to live in a city where there is so much fantastic comedy being created and performed so frequently. Jangleheart is a chance to celebrate that over a weekend TOGETHER (and also maybe have a lot of our buddies come back and visit.)
What is different this year?
Our friends at the Den Theater did not have room for us, so we had to go another route. Luckily iO, Annoyance, and CIC were able to accommodate us.
There will be no three day passes for sale this year. Each day will be on sale individually. So if you wanna catch the whole thing - you gotta buy them all one by one. Sorry!
Since we are operating out of existing comedy theaters we’ll be featuring some of their improv teams and productions.
Why not the Den Theatre again?! What a bummer!
We know, we were really bummed to. They’ve got a lot going on with construction. We’re really excited to be working with these new partners though. These theaters are perfect locations for this festival. They are the places that influenced the gallery the most and where most of the performers associated with it continue to work.
Who are these theaters?
Oh jeeze, you should know! They’re the best. They’ve got shows going on year round as well as classes. You can find out more about them at their respective websites--
Can I submit my improv team/sketch group/other thing?
We aren’t having any sort of OPEN CALL for submissions this year but we will absolutely hear them! Send submissions and ideas to firstname.lastname@example.org.
When will you announce the schedule?
When do tickets go on sale?
Also August 15th!
Whats with the one ticket for sale per day? Why can’t I buy a ticket to see the one show I really want to see?
Because we want you to come and see a TON of shows! If you want to just see that one team, you can do that all year long. Chances are you can catch many of the groups performing often all over the city. The idea behind Jangleheart Circus is to expose audiences and performers to creative shows that they might not be familiar with.
So I’m buying a ticket at there is no guarantee I’ll get to see everything that I want?
It may happen, and we’re sorry for that. BUT! We’re going to have shows going on multiple stages, so if you get shut out of one show, there are going to be other great groups playing at the same time.
Will you answer my specific question?
Probably! Shoot an email to email@example.com and put “JANGLEHEART” in the subject. We’ll get back to you as soon as we can.
We can't wait to see you in at the Festival!
